Interconnecting Heterogeneous HPC Scientific Applications

The goal of the Schooner Project is to investigate a new model for High Performance Computing (HPC) applications in which the application is constructed as a heterogeneous distributed program or, equivalently, a meta-computation. Computational heterogeneity in this model occurs in several dimensions, including programming languages, programming models, and machine architectures. With this approach, an application is constructed from a distributed collection of component codes executing on a variety of heterogeneous machines spanning both short- and long-haul networks. A software interconnection system connects components into a single program in a manner that is transparent to the user, and provides configuration and execution control over the resulting computation.

In short, the vision is of a future where codes can be selected for an application based solely on their value to the computation and not their computational requirements, a philosophy that goes beyond simple accommodation of heterogeneity to exploitation.
