03/30/04

We spent this meeting finalizing all of our plans for this semester.

  • Assassin Game
Registration for the assassin game will begin at our next meeting on 4/06/04 and last through 4/12/04. The game will officially begin on 4/13/04 and be moderated by Ted. He is also responsible for developing the website to administer things and contain the official rules.

  • Movie Night
We will have our second movie night at the next meeting and show The Matrix Revolutions as it gets released the same day. José will order pizza and handle beverages. Other movies considered for movie night include Pi, Office Space, Requiem for a Dream, Run Lola Run, and Chasing Amy.

  • Speakers
To finish off the semester events it was decided to sponsor talks from Andy Lenards and Stuart Reges. Andy will speak about Component Oriented Software Development on 4/20/04 and Stuart will give a talk about the concept of Meta on 4/27/04. We decided to offer pizza and beverages for both events.

  • High School Programming Competition
After thorough consideration, we realized it was too late to offer a high school programming competition this semester. We will defer until next year, but José volunteered to contact local high schools and get in touch with their programming teachers to determine interest.

  • WICS Competition
As the WICS club (http://www.cs.arizona.edu/wics) is considering offering their annual programming competition, we elected to offer our assistance setting up and running the competition. Amy Platt volunteered to communicate with WICS leadership and inform the ACM of their plans.

02/26/04

Marty Stepp gave our first ACM Alumni talk to a packed house. The ACM would like to thank Marty for his excellent presentation.

02/03/04

This meeting served to organize and plan our semester activities.

  • Assassin Game
We have decided to have another game of assassin (http://www.cs.arizona.edu/acm/assassin) to foster greater awareness of the ACM within our department. Ted Glaza, Mike Stepp, Mike LeHew, and Andy Lenards volunteered to plan and help coordinate the game. We are hoping to begin the game toward the latter part of the semester. Several plans were discussed including a website to manage tracking versus the traditional "Polaroid" system.

  • Kickoff Meeting
For our first faculty talk of the new semester we discussed several potential candidates in our faculty who would be interesting speakers for the ACM. While a number of people were mentioned, it was decided that students would be most interested in a talk from Ralph Griswold. Stuart volunteered to contact him on our behalf. We allotted $100 of our budget to purchase pizza and beverages for this talk.

  • High School Programming Competition
Our members are very interested in pursuing a programming competition for Tucson area high schools. We decided that it would be run in a format similar to our local and regional ACM competitions. We would expect about one team per high school and would like to hold it in the Gould-Simpson lab. It was suggested that we speak with department head Pete Downey for assistance funding the event. A volunteer committee was setup to help plan the competition consisting of Ted, Michael, Amy, José, and Andy.

  • Student Talks
Due to popular demand, the ACM will begin sponsoring student talks. The talks can be about anything of interest to members. Interested students should e-mail Ted Glaza (tedglaza@email.arizona.edu) and he will present their suggested talk for a vote at the next ACM meeting.

  • Alumni Talks
It has also been suggested that we invite recent Alumni to speak on campus about the challenges they have faced since graduating from our department. Marty Stepp was suggested as a prime candidate and Mike Stepp volunteered to contact him on our behalf.

  • Movie Night
After the success of last semester's movie night, our members are interested in having another. We will decide upon the movie at the administrative meeting before the movie. We also officially informed José that Hackers is not a classic computer science film. He has just been fooled yet again.

  • Career/Research Event
Many students expressed their desire for the ACM to sponsor an event geared toward finding employment for computer science students. Either summer internships, full-time jobs after graduation, or research with faculty, students would like to focus on the basics to help get hired. We could possibly work with Career Services as well.

10/20/03

The quick meeting was focused on wrapping up the local programming competition and transitioning to the regional competition.

  • Local Competition Awards
The winners of the local programming competition were awarded their prizes and recognized for their achievements by the general membership

  • Regional Competition Practice
Stuart has volunteered to work with the four teams representing the University of Arizona in the Rocky Mountain Regional competition. The first planned meeting will be this upcoming Thursday at 5:30pm in Gould-Simpson 701. Stuart also needs the information sheets as soon as possible.

  • Regional Competition Preparation
A few important tasks were identified to prepare for the regional competition. We need to update the competition page to provide travel/campus information, etc. We also need to coordinate volunteer efforts, decide on a schedule, choose a restaurant for the awards banquet, etc. These details will be finalized at the next meeting.

  • Movie Night
The next meeting will be the first ever ACM movie night. The general membership decided on the computer classic TRON. A breakdown of the votes is provided below.
    Would Watch First Choice
    Vanalla Sky 8 1
    Matrix Reloaded 5
    Pulp Fiction 4
    TRON 8 5
    Fight Club 8 4
    Hackers 5
    Spaceballs 8 2
    Van Wilder 3

10/06/03

The meeting began with pizza in the lobby and Nigel's wonderful talk on ubiquitous computing which drew quite a turnout. Afterwards we did more planning for the local programming competition.

  • ACM Budget
After spending roughly $200 on the kickoff meeting for food and beverages, we planned out expenditures for the rest of the year. With six more events involving food (including the local programming competition) we will work to spend about $100 per event. This leaves us with $200 left from our department approved budget for prizes. Stuart has offered to discuss this with Dr. Downey and will inform us as soon as possible how much we can spend on prizes, etc.

  • Languages offered
We proposed a number of non-traditional languages for the programming competition like C# and Icon, but decided to hold the languages to those allowed at the international competition. C and C++ teams will compete on the Debian Linux machines with the emacs/gnu/etc. and the Java teams will compete on Windows machines with TextPad/jdk, etc. Stuart and Kelly Heffner will discuss the number of computers, limiting internet access, etc., with lab staff.

  • Competition Time
The local competition will be held on Saturday, October 18th. We decided to hold it from 1:00-5:00pm because we then only have to supply snacks and it is easier to handle last minute details the morning of the competition.

  • Prize Committee
A committee was formed to decide on the prizes for the local competition. José, Shauna, Dylan, Amy, and Mike L. volunteered to serve on the committee. (It was officially noted that Ted is not allowed to serve on the prize committee due to his love of programming literature.) Stuart will inform the committee of the amount for the 9 prizes (three 1st, three 2nd, three 3rd) as soon as he knows. José informed us that the prizes must be computer related (e.g. hardware, programming books, etc.) by department mandate. The committee will select the prizes for the competition by Friday the 10th so we can try and have them by our Monday meeting on October 20th.

  • Advertising Committee
We created an advertisement committee to help spread the word about the programming competition. Kelly, Mike S., Anne, Amy, and Mike L. volunteered to serve on the committee. They will flood newsgroups, post flyers, etc., to generate interest among the student body. We also discussed speaking at the beginning of various CS classes as part of the campaign.

  • Food Committee
The food committee was established to handle the necessary snacks for the committee. Ted, José, and Mike L. volunteered to serve on the committee. They will be responsible for providing pop and various snacks at the competition. It was suggested they avoid things like chips as the contest was in a computer lab. If you have any suggestions of food you would like to see at the competition, send them an e-mail.

  • Registration Committee
For no reason whatsoever, we created a formal committee consisting of only Ted to handle registration for the competition. He will write some sort of registration web portal to allow teams to sign up. It was decided registration should be extended until midnight on Friday the 17th with possible exceptions being made on a case by case basis the morning of the competition. Registration will be closed once 15 teams have signed up as we cannot fit more people into the lab. Ted will also handle posting the official rules for the competition which will be as close to the regional/international rules as possible.

  • Next meeting
It was decided that the next meeting (Monday, October 20th) should be a restful meeting consisting of prize distribution for winning teams. We'll also begin planning for our first movie night (the following meeting on November 3rd).

09/22/03

As the semester's first organizational meeting, we discussed a broad array of potential opportunities. The primary focus revolved around planning the first general attendance meeting and the local programming competition. Thanks to Mike Stepp and Michael LeHew for contributing this summary.

  • Kick Off Meeting
We decided that the first general meeting (to be held on 10/06/03) should be an interesting faculty talk. We invited Nigel Davies who kindly accepted. José is looking into the purchase of pizza for the event, which should be ordered and delivered around 5:30. He will also speak with the department about the use of their cups, napkins, etc. Ted will provide a brief introduction to the ACM, our officers, and Nigel's talk.

  • Programming Competition Committee Chair
Michael LeHew (mlehew@cs.arizona.edu) was elected chair of the programming competition committee. His responsibilities will include the organization, management, and advertisement of the local programming competition.

  • Local Programming Competition
The following responsibilities were designated for the competition, to be held on 10/18/03.
    • Stuart Reges: Problem selection, finding judges, coordinating with lab staff, and paying for everything until he can be reimbursed
    • José Gifford: Speaking with the department about competition prizes and food
    • Ted 'T-Luxe' Glaza: Web registration site, advertising, and possibly a page with local information for the regional competition
    • Mike 'Sweetness' LeHew: Volunteer scheduling, organization, and coordination
Furthermore, we decided the best option for food (if offered) is pizza and pop and the time of the competition should be from 12:00-4:00pm. Mike will begin sorting out the remaining details via e-mail.

  • High School Programming Competition
For the first time, we are considering a programming competition to be held for Tucson high schools to promote computer science in the local community. It was agreed the competition should be held on a Saturday next spring in Gould-Simpson 228. We discussed other possibilities as well, such as members each mentoring teams from each high school as they prepare for the competition. We will begin working seriously on this project after the other competitions have ended.

  • Meeting Times/Location
We agreed that the present meeting time of 5:30 in Gould-Simpson 701 is the most convenient this semester. We plan to meet twice a month for organizational meetings as well as speaker presentations. We are considering having movie nights on the remaining Mondays.

  • Web site access
Access to the website and other resources, such as the mailing list, has been made available to the officers. Their help in keeping things up to date will be greatly appreciated.

  • Movie Night
Due to overwhelming interest of those in attendance, it was decided that we should pursue a movie night for members. Adam Powell (adamp@cs.arizona.edu) was elected to organize the event. He will speak with lab staff about arranging for DVD equipment to be setup in G-S 701. Ted volunteered to provide popcorn and other food accessories.

  • Ted wore a hat
To the delight of all in attendance, Ted wore a delicious little red plastic cowboy hat to the meeting.

We also have minutes available from previous semesters:
