VMware Academic Program

The Department of Computer Science at the University of Arizona has an agreement with VMware that makes some of their software available to CS students and academic staff at the University of Arizona, main campus, at little or no cost.  The program is called the VMware Academic Program (VMAP). Products available through this program are evaluation copies that can be used for one year.

Students: in order to participate in this program, you must be taking at least one Computer Science class (for credit) or participating in relevant, faculty-directed research in the semester for which you request access.

If you are interested, go to the Services web page and select Request a VMAP account. An account will be created for you and you will receive email with the details.

The VMAP site is a software distribution area that we have tailored to our department.

  1. The URL is http://vmap.cs.arizona.edu.
  2. VMAP accounts are only active for one semester and only during the semester, not during breaks. You may request a VMAP account once the semester begins if you are registered for at least one CS class.  If you are not taking any CS classes but are conducting relevant, faculty-directed research, the faculty member can request an account for you by emailing
  3. An email will be sent to your UA email address from kivuto.com with the information about your VMAP account. If you haven't received an email within a week of your request, email .
  4. To login, go to the URL (above), click the Sign In link, enter your email address (as your username) and the password sent to you by kivuto.
  5. If you have forgotten your password (or missed the email containing it) go to the URL, click the Sign In link, and click on the Forgot your password? link.
  6. To find out what software is available, log in and click the Students or Faculty/Staff tab at the upper left. There is also a Product Search available near the top right of the page.  Other products (i.e., not VMware) are also offered, but these are not free.
  7. VMware software downloaded through VMAP are evaluation copies that can be used for 1 year. A product cannot be downloaded again until the 1 year evaluation period has expired.
  8. It is strongly recommended that you burn downloaded software to DVD/CD for safekeeping, in case your hard drive fails or you get a new computer.
  9. A full description of the program and membership can be found here.

The usage guidelines provided by VMAP include:

  1. For certain products, you may be given a product key for installing the software. You may not disclose the product key to anyone else.
  2. You may not give copies of VMAP software to anyone else. Other eligible students must obtain their own software and license keys through VMAP.
  3. You may use the software for non-commercial purposes including instructional use, research and/or design, and development and testing of projects for class assignments, tests, or personal projects. You may not use VMAP software for any for-profit software development.
  4. When you are no longer taking courses or conducting relevant research in the CS department, you may no longer obtain VMAP software. However, you may continue to use previously installed products on your computer, provided you continue to follow VMAP program guidelines.
