You need gnu-make (gmake) to compile alto. Make sure that the environment variable `OSTYPE' has the value `osf1' if you plattform is Digital Unix and some other value if you plattform is Linux.
No type `gmake headers' to produce some headerfiles. and the type `gmake' to produce the executable `alto'.
