Although there is no sure-fire way to obtain articles from Japanese
scientific and technical journals, here are three possible sources:
-
Authors:
- Contact one of the authors and ask them to send
a copy. You can often infer an email address with a little effort,
or use the actual regular mail address given in the table of contents
if it is complete enough. Note that this is worthwhile even if
the article is in Japanese since there may be related articles
in English that can be sent as well. A list of Japanese email domains
together with some hints on inferring addresses is available
here .
-
Libraries:
- Check your local library, preferably one associated with a
university or the company at which you work. Even if they do
not subscribe directly, they can usually get copies
of articles for a modest fee using the Interlibrary Loan system.
The JapanCS Project
has recently arranged for its journals to be
transferred to the
University of Arizona library, so many of the
articles will eventually be available using Interlibrary
Loan from that source.
-
Commercial
Services:
- A number of companies will fax copies
of articles from technical journals for a fee. Although coverage
of Japanese journals is sometimes sparse, this can be an easy
way to obtain articles if their database happens to contain the
journal that you're looking for. One of the best known is CARL
UnCover, which supports free online browsing via telnet to site
database.carl.org.
As of August 1995, CARL UnCover was known to contain articles
from the following journals in the
JapanCS Project archives:
- Fujitsu Scientific & Technical Journal
- Hitachi Review
- NEC Research and Development
- IEICE Transactions (series)
- Advanced Robotics
