Barnard, Efrat, Hariri Awarded $70,000
December 5, 2008
Kobus Barnard and Alon Efrat from CS, and Salim Hariri from ECE have received an award of $70,000 from the NSF Industry/University Cooperative Research Center (I/UCRC) for Autonomic Computing, together with Imaginestics (a company providing design tools). The project studies efficient methods for finding industrial parts in images based on representations of their 3D geometric form stored in large electronic catalogs. Challenges include developing an efficient indexing strategy for large industrial part datasets where many items have similar form, developing corresponding image representations that can quickly be matched to the database, and dealing with occlusion and clutter in scenes where the parts need to be found.
