How Spatial Attention Affects Visual Performance and Alters Appearance

Attention is the mechanism that allows us to selectively process the vast amount of information that we receive and to guide our behavior. Spatial attention allows us to select relevant information by attending to particular locations in the environment. First, I will present psychophysical studies dealing with the effects of voluntary (endogenous) and involuntary (exogenous) spatial attention on early vision, such as contrast sensitivity (performance) and perceived contrast (appearance). Then, I will discuss studies on the effects on spatial attention on contrast sensitivity that relate psychophysical performance and fMRI activity. Together these studies advance our understanding of the behavioral consequences and the neural correlates of spatial attention.
