Visual Processing of Faces, Tools and Body Movements in the Absence of Awareness

Humans are experts in extracting important visual information from faces (identity, expression) and body movements (intention, direction of motion). We are also very efficient in processing visual information of tools for action. In this talk, I will present both psychophysical and neuroimaging data to show that 1) Some aspects of the input information is extracted automatically; 2) Much of the information is processed by category specific cortical mechanisms; and 3) rendering stimuli invisible through interocular suppression is a useful way to isolate selective neural mechanisms.
