Two Kinds of Math - and How to Teach Them
ABSTRACT: I'll make a case that what we call "mathematical thinking" actually comprises two very different thought processes, which require very different approaches in teaching math. I will further argue that one of those thought processes - the one every citizen needs in modern society - is far better learned outside the traditional classroom, and that mathematics teachers in the future should focus entirely on the other form of mathematical thinking. For some of my claims I'll provide strong supporting evidence. For others, I'll try to explain how I have reached the conclusions I will present.
